Nobody expected GTA 6 to get a family rating, and it didn't. The ESRB rated it M for Mature 17+ at the start of October, and every other major ratings board has landed in the same place.

If you're a parent trying to work out what's actually in the game, the short answer is: everything the series is known for, with a few labels that are worth reading properly.

The ratings, country by country

  • North America (ESRB): M, Mature 17+
  • Europe (PEGI): 18
  • Australia: R18+
  • South Korea: adults only, given in mid-October

Ratings can differ slightly by country because each board has its own rules, but there's no region where GTA 6 is rated for teenagers.

What the ESRB labels mean in plain English

The ESRB listing carries these content descriptors:

  • Blood and Gore and Intense Violence. Shootings, fights and graphic injuries. This is a crime game, and violence is the core of it.
  • Use of Drugs and Alcohol. Characters use both, and it isn't just background detail.
  • Nudity and Strong Sexual Content. Expect strip clubs and sexual scenes, as in earlier GTA games.
  • Strong Language. Constant swearing.
  • Mature Humor. Crude jokes, parody ads and radio content aimed at adults.

The listing also has an In-Game Purchases notice. Rockstar hasn't explained what you'll be able to buy in single player.

One thing that's missing is interesting. According to coverage of the listing, there's no "Users Interact" label, which normally appears when players can chat or play with strangers online. That fits with everything else suggesting GTA 6 launches as a single-player game first. We've covered that in detail in our piece on whether GTA 6 has online at launch.

The PEGI text that got pulled

A PEGI page with a longer, more graphic description of the game appeared online and was then taken down. It reportedly mentioned cocaine use, decapitation and nightclub interactions. IBTimes UK reported on it but couldn't verify the removed wording against a live version of the page.

So treat those specifics carefully. They might be accurate, or they might describe the game more bluntly than the final listing will. The rating itself, PEGI 18, isn't in doubt.

How to set limits on PS5 and Xbox

If GTA 6 is coming into a house with younger players, both consoles make it simple to block games above a set age rating.

PS5:

  1. Go to Settings, then Family and Parental Controls, then Family Management.
  2. Pick the child's account and open Parental Controls.
  3. Set the age level for games. Anything rated higher won't launch on that account.

Xbox Series X|S:

  1. Install the Xbox Family Settings app on your phone and sign in.
  2. Select the child's account and open Content restrictions.
  3. Choose an age limit. You can approve exceptions one by one from the app.

Both systems also let you set spending limits, which is worth doing given the In-Game Purchases notice.

The bottom line

GTA 6 is an adults' game, and the ratings boards agree on that everywhere. Nothing in the listings is a surprise for the series, but the drug use and sexual content are flagged clearly. If you're buying it for someone under 17, read the descriptors above first and decide with your eyes open.
